Then, after a few years the software becomes outdated and you have to buy new software, handle the upgrades, and possibly even migrate your data. That sounds like a pain.

Why it's actually better for the customer
In addition to everything stated above, the SaaS model actually leads to a better product. Think about the incentives for a company that makes all of their money up-front, before the customer has really had a chance to become familiar with the product. Obviously in that scenario, the company will be more interested in marketing and sales, and less interested in product design and ongoing customer support. Well, that's how traditional software companies operate.
